WHY DO VOLCANOES ERUPT?
Magma — molten rock beneath the earth's crust. Tectonic pressure and dissolved gases
accumulate in a magma chamber until the pressure exceeds the strength of the rocks above it —
then the magma (which is called lava on the surface) erupts through a vent and crater outward.
