This 3D scene renders each simulated radioactive decay as an individual glowing particle popping into existence at a random position around a detector core, fired by a genuine Poisson process at a fixed true background rate. Watching hundreds of independent, memoryless events accumulate makes it visually obvious why the count in any short window fluctuates by a factor of two or three purely by chance — the pips cluster unevenly in time even though the underlying rate never moves. A ring around the detector flashes only when a counting window's z-score crosses your chosen threshold, letting you see directly how often ordinary noise alone would get mistaken for a radiological anomaly, and how a longer counting window calms that down.
