How it works

Both sides are driven by the same engine: legal moves are generated per piece (pawns, knights, bishops, rooks, queens, kings — no castling or en passant, pawns auto-promote to queen), then filtered to only those that don't leave the mover's own king in check. Each side searches the resulting game tree with minimax and alpha–beta pruning to the depth set by the slider, scoring leaf positions as:

Material — standard values (P=1, N=B=3, R=5, Q=9).
Centre control — a small bonus for pieces on the four central squares, scaled by the aggression slider.
Mobility — the difference in legal-move counts for each side, also scaled by aggression.

When a side has no legal moves, it's checkmate (if its king is attacked) or stalemate — either ends the game, shown in Status, and a new game starts automatically after a short pause.
