H₂ — cathode (−) O₂ — anode (+)

Electrolysis of Water Simulator (2D)

This 2D simulator drives a simple electrolytic cell: two electrodes sit in water with a dissolved electrolyte, and raising the source voltage above the 1.23 V decomposition threshold sends current through the solution, releasing hydrogen bubbles at the cathode and oxygen bubbles at the anode in the fixed 2:1 volume ratio that Faraday's law predicts. Adjust the electrolyte concentration to change the solution's conductivity and current draw, and watch the live readouts — current, charge passed, moles of electrons transferred, and collected gas volume — update in real time from the actual charge passed through the cell.
