What is a Neuron?

Neurons are fundamental units of the brain and nervous system, cells responsible for receiving sensory information from the surrounding world, sending motor commands to our muscles, as well as processing and transmitting electrical signals between each other. Stages of signal transmission

1. Resting potential

In a resting state, the neuron is 'charged'. Inside the cell, there are more negatively charged ions, while outside, there are positively charged ones. This potential difference (around -70mV) is maintained by ion pumps and forms the basis for generating an impulse.

2. Action potential

When a neuron receives sufficient stimulus, voltage-gated channels open. Sodium (Na+) ions quickly enter the cell, changing the charge to positive. This depolarization wave, or nerve impulse, travels along the axon — the long extension of the neuron.

3. Synaptic transmission

When the impulse reaches the end of the axon, it forces the release of chemical substances — neurotransmitters — into the space (synapse) between neurons. These substances bind to the next neuron, transmitting the signal and, possibly, triggering a new action potential.

What is 'all or nothing' in neuronal work?

The principle of 'all or nothing' means that if a stimulus reaches a certain threshold, a full action potential is generated. If the stimulus is weaker than the threshold, no impulse occurs at all. The strength of the impulse is always the same; only its frequency changes.
