How it works

Every real device only speaks its own radio protocol — a Zigbee bulb has no idea a Z-Wave lock exists, even sitting a metre away. Devices here form a same-protocol mesh link whenever two neighbours of the same ecosystem are within local range, but that mesh can never bridge to a different protocol on its own — the two ecosystems stay separate islands no matter how close they sit. A gateway removes that wall: because it keeps a radio and driver for every protocol, any device inside its translation range gets a direct link to the hub regardless of what it speaks, and the hub relays each message into the protocol the recipient understands.

Gateway — toggles protocol translation at the hub; off, only same-protocol clusters connect and everything else is an unreachable island.
Device count — how many devices populate the arena; more devices with the gateway off simply means more, smaller islands, not more integration.
Protocol ecosystems — how many distinct radio standards (Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth) are mixed in; a single-protocol network is already integrated by its own mesh, so diversity is what makes a gateway necessary.
Gateway range — how far the hub's radios reach; devices outside every protocol's range stay unreachable even with translation turned on.

Real-world relevance: this is exactly why smart-home hubs like a Zigbee/Z-Wave/Wi-Fi bridge exist — without one, a household ends up with three or four separate, mutually blind device networks instead of one system.
