Depth of field and the camera

Only one distance is perfectly in focus. Objects nearer or farther are smeared into discs of confusion. The disc diameter on the sensor is b = f² / (N (s − f)) · |d − s| / d for focal length f, f-number N, focus distance s and object distance d. A disc smaller than about 0.029 mm (on 36 mm film) looks sharp.

The hyperfocal distance H = f²/(N c) + f gives the sharp range s(H−f)/(H+s−2f) to s(H−f)/(H−s). Zoom in or open the aperture and the sharp slice gets thin: that is why a 400 mm lens at f/5.6 needs perfect focus on an animal's eye.

Exposure, shutter speed and ISO

Correct exposure needs EV = log₂(N² / t) − log₂(ISO/100) to equal the scene brightness (about EV 15 in full sun, 11 at sunrise, 3 or less at night). Each stop is a factor of two in light. A fast shutter freezes motion but needs a wider aperture or higher ISO; high ISO adds noise.

Motion blur on the sensor is f · (v⊥ / d) · t: lens focal length times the animal's angular speed times exposure time. Hand shake follows the old rule of thumb: use a shutter of at least 1 / f seconds (1/400 s for a 400 mm lens) unless you steady the camera.

How animals detect you

Sight falls with distance, depends on how well the species sees (rhinos see poorly beyond ~30 m, giraffes spot you from 300 m), on light, and on cover such as tall grass or rocks. Hearing depends on how much noise you make: a quiet crouch, a walk, a sprint, an idling or moving engine. Smell is a plume carried by the wind: you are only smelled by animals downwind of you, inside a cone that widens with distance. Predators approach prey from downwind for exactly this reason.

The graph shows the three channels combined as 1 − (1−sight)(1−hearing)(1−scent). When the accumulated awareness passes about 40% an animal looks up; past 85% prey flee, and rhinos, elephants and hippos may charge.

Tracking: footprints, dung and calls

Each species leaves a characteristic track: an elephant's round pad, a giraffe's two long hooves, a zebra's single horseshoe, a rhino's three toes, a hippo's four toes, and cat tracks with no claw marks (a cheetah's claws do show, like running spikes). Tracks fade with age, dung dries from dark and moist to pale. Reading age, direction of travel and spacing tells a tracker how far ahead the animal is. Calls carry much farther than you can see: a lion's roar can be heard from kilometres away.

Ethics: distance and disturbance

Real rangers keep a safe distance (about 30-40 m from elephants, rhinos, lions and hippos) because stressed animals flee, abandon feeding or charge. Here, flushing animals raises the disturbance meter and a photo taken too close is penalised.

What is simplified

The reserve is 470 m across and runs on a 20-second hour. Species are modelled with real size, mass, speed and activity patterns, but behaviour is a compact state machine. Hunts always end out of sight; the cheetah sprints after antelope that are not modelled. Wind is a steady field with a Gaussian scent plume, not turbulent air. Depth of field and motion blur are computed per pixel from the real optics formulas, but the sky, grass and water are stylised. Sound effects are synthesised, not recordings.
