How it works

Each leaf is an independent particle with its own fall speed, sway phase and spin. While aloft it descends at a base rate scaled by the fall-speed slider, drifts sideways with a slow ambient sine-wave wind plus a fast-decaying gust impulse, and sways side to side on its own phase — the same three-term motion (fall + ambient wind + gust) used by the companion 3D forest, just projected onto one vertical plane instead of three axes. Click anywhere on the canvas to fire a wind gust.

Once a leaf's height reaches the ground it stops falling, drifts slowly with residual wind, and after a short timer (or once blown off the visible strip) respawns near the canopy of a random tree — keeping a steady population in the air without ever-growing leaf litter. The season button recolors the foliage palette, sky and ground (autumn/winter/spring) exactly as in the 3D version, without altering the underlying particle physics.
