Shape-Selective Zeolite Catalysis: The Molecular Sieve

A zeolite particle's rigid, uniform nanopores act as a molecular sieve: only reactant molecules narrower than the pore opening can enter the channel, reach the internal active site, react, and exit as product — bulkier shapes simply bounce off the exterior. Dial the pore diameter to watch selectivity shift between molecular shapes, or toggle to an unconfined catalyst surface that reacts with everything indiscriminately, with no size cutoff at all.
