Nanoscale Size Ladder

How small is "nano," really? This simulator turns the abstract idea of scale into a 3D flight down a logarithmic size ladder — from a 5 mm ant, through a red blood cell, a virus and a strand of DNA, all the way to a single hydrogen atom at 0.1 nanometres. Ten real reference objects sit at the exact position their true size demands on a log axis, and dragging the scale slider (or letting the auto zoom-in tour drive) dollies the camera through them, fading each into and out of focus as its neighbours take over. Live readouts track the exact interpolated size in the right unit, how many times smaller the current scale is than the starting ant, and — grounded in the geometric S/V = 3/r relationship for a sphere — the surface-to-volume ratio at that scale, which climbs by many orders of magnitude as objects shrink into the nanoscale and explains why nanomaterials behave so differently from bulk matter.
