Nanomechanical Duffing Resonator

Nanoresonators — the vibrating cores of NEMS oscillators, mass sensors and gyroscopes — behave like a textbook damped spring only while their vibration amplitude stays small. Push a doubly-clamped nanobeam harder and the mid-span stretching it undergoes turns its restoring force cubic, not linear: this is the Duffing nonlinearity. This simulator numerically integrates the real driven-damped Duffing equation for a nanobeam in real time, renders the beam's bending mode shape as an instanced 3D mesh, and plots the amplitude-vs-frequency response as you sweep — revealing the classic bent resonance curve, the bistable window, and the frequency-dependent jump between two stable vibration states that traces out a hysteresis loop, exactly as measured on real NEMS/MEMS resonators in the lab.
