Conventional fertilizer is dumped as a soluble pile near the surface. Rain and irrigation carry it downward at a rate set by soil moisture; only the fraction that happens to drift past an actual root is absorbed — the rest sinks below the root zone as leached runoff.
Nanofertilizer instead pre-positions the same total nutrient mass as sealed capsules through the root zone. A capsule's shell is engineered to stay closed until an active, growing root tip comes within range — root tips secrete exudate enzymes that erode the shell locally. Release only happens where and when a root can immediately use it, so uptake tracks the plant's real demand instead of a single oversized burst.
- Soil moisture / rainfall — higher moisture speeds the downward drift of loose bulk nutrient (more leaching); capsule shells are far less moisture-sensitive since the release trigger is root contact, not water.
- Apply fertilizer dose — releases an equal nutrient mass to both columns at once, for a fair side-by-side comparison.
- Use efficiency (NUE) — the share of all nutrient ever applied that a root actually absorbed, versus lost to leaching or still in transit.
