How it works

Two real nanofabrication routes, rendered as two chambers in one 3D volume you can orbit freely. Left: a ball mill fractures grains via Rittinger's law (fracture energy ∝ γ/d) and cold-welds them back together once they're small — the same fracture/weld equilibrium real mechanical-alloying research reports. Right: classical nucleation theory governs how fast fresh nanocrystals appear from a supersaturated monomer bath, and Gibbs-Thomson diffusion-limited growth (or Ostwald-ripening shrinkage) governs how each one evolves afterward — burst injection front-loads nucleation into a short pulse (narrow size spread); a slow drip keeps nucleating throughout (broad spread).
