Biotechnology harnesses the cell's own information pipeline —
the "central dogma" — and engineers it to manufacture a chosen
product instead of (or alongside) the organism's own proteins.
DNA --transcription--> mRNA --translation--> protein --folding--> product
- Transcription rate — how fast RNA polymerase reads the DNA template into messenger RNA.
- Translation rate — how fast the ribosome reads each mRNA codon and adds an amino acid to the growing chain.
- Mutation rate — chance a copying error changes an amino acid, altering the folded protein's colour here as a stand-in for altered function — the basis of both natural evolution and directed protein engineering.
- Application — the same synthesis pipeline underlies a therapeutic antibody, a pest-resistant crop trait, or an industrial enzyme; only the downstream purification and use differ.
