How it works

Steam sterilization kills a microbial population by first-order (exponential) decay — the same kinetics used to validate real medical device sterilization batches under ISO 17665 / AAMI TIR:

N(t) = N0 · 10^(-t / D_T)
D_T  = D_ref · 10^((T_ref − T) / z)
SAL  = N(t)  (target ≤ 10⁻⁶)

N0 — initial bioburden (colony-forming units on/in the device before sterilization).
D_T — the decay time constant at temperature T: minutes needed to kill 90% (1 log) of the population. It shrinks as temperature rises via the z-value (here z = 10 °C, a standard steam value), so the "Load / D-value" slider sets D at the 121 °C reference and the sim rescales it live for whatever temperature you dial in.
Exposure time — only counts once the chamber has reached set temperature (the purge/come-up phase does not sterilize).
SAL — Sterility Assurance Level, the probability a single unit is non-sterile after the cycle. Regulatory practice requires SAL ≤ 10⁻⁶ (one in a million) for an implantable device before it can ship — the readout turns green only once the surviving population crosses that line.

Real-world relevance: this half-cycle / overkill validation approach (run enough time to drive a worst-case bioburden well past 10⁻⁶) is exactly how manufacturers qualify autoclave cycles for reusable surgical instruments and single-use sterile devices before regulatory clearance.
