Every retinal ganglion cell reads out light through a center-surround receptive field: a small excitatory (or inhibitory) center antagonized by a larger surround of the opposite sign, first mapped by Stephen Kuffler and modelled as a difference of Gaussians by Robert Rodieck. This simulation renders a photoreceptor mosaic feeding a single ganglion cell in 3D — move a light spot across the mosaic, resize it, tune how strong the surround's antagonism is, and switch between ON-center and OFF-center wiring, while the center and surround drive, the instantaneous firing rate, and a live spike train on the cell's axon update from the same difference-of-Gaussians math real visual neuroscience uses.
