Neonatal Thermoregulation in the Incubator

Newborns — especially preterm infants — lose heat far faster than adults because of their high surface-area-to-mass ratio, thin skin, and immature ability to shiver. This simulator models a real infant's heat balance inside an incubator: radiative loss to cold walls, convective loss to air, evaporative loss through skin moisture, and conductive loss to the mattress, all competing against metabolic heat production (including brown-fat non-shivering thermogenesis). Adjust incubator air temperature, humidity, wall temperature and double-wall shielding, or switch between an extremely preterm, very preterm and term infant, and watch the core temperature drift toward — or away from — normothermia in real time, with each heat-loss mechanism visualised as particles streaming off the infant's body.
