How it works

Maintenance fluid uses the Holliday–Segar rule (mL/day):

first 10 kg  → 100 mL/kg
next 10 kg   → 50 mL/kg
each kg >20  → 20 mL/kg

The fluid deficit from dehydration is estimated as percent body-weight loss:

deficit (mL) = % dehydration × weight (kg) × 10

Replacement follows the classic pediatric 8/16-hour isotonic schedule:

first 8 h:   ½ deficit + ⅓ of 24h maintenance
next 16 h:   ½ deficit + ⅔ of 24h maintenance

Oral (ORT) — capped near 10 mL/kg/hr; the standard first-line route for mild–moderate dehydration per WHO/AAP guidance. Severe dehydration forces IV.
IV line — delivers the calculated rate directly, used for severe dehydration or when oral intake fails.
The droplets falling into the body represent fluid entering the extracellular compartment (outer shell) and slowly equilibrating into the intracellular compartment (inner core) — the body regains its blue, hydrated tone as the deficit closes.

This mirrors the bedside calculation pediatric residents perform on every admission for gastroenteritis, vomiting, or poor oral intake.
