The thyroid gland sits as two small lobes on either side of a dog's windpipe, low in the throat. It produces the hormones T4 (thyroxine) and T3, which set the pace of nearly every cell's metabolism. In dogs, the most common thyroid disorder by far is hypothyroidism — usually caused by immune-mediated destruction of the gland (lymphocytic thyroiditis) — which leaves the body running "low and slow." True hyperthyroidism is rare in dogs (unlike cats) but is included here for comparison.
Hypothyroidism is one of the most commonly diagnosed hormonal disorders in dogs, most often striking mid-size and large breeds around 4–10 years old. It's easily managed with a once- or twice-daily synthetic thyroxine tablet, with most dogs showing improved energy within weeks and coat regrowth over a few months.

Circulating T4 hormone sets the pace of metabolism. Lower it and the orbiting "energy" particles slow down, the heart rate drops, the coat fades and thins, and the body silhouette thickens — the classic hypothyroid picture. Raise it above normal and the reverse happens.
