Bioartificial Organ Growth

A bioartificial organ starts as cells seeded on a porous scaffold inside a bioreactor. This simulation grows that construct in 3D: hundreds of seeding sites across a lattice scaffold each carry a local cell population that multiplies by logistic growth, capped by a carrying capacity that depends on how much oxygen actually reaches that spot. Because a bioreactor can only perfuse oxygen in from the surface, concentration falls off toward the center — and once a scaffold gets large enough, or perfusion slow enough, the core drops below the viability threshold and its cells die off while the periphery keeps thriving. Adjust perfusion rate and scaffold radius to find the point where the diffusion limit turns a healthy construct into one with a dead core.
