This scene recreates a clockwork orrery, an 18th-century mechanical device that models the motion of the planets around the sun using interlocking brass gear trains instead of software. A single drive gear transmits rotation through a chain of meshing gears of different tooth counts, and each gear's size ratio determines how fast (and in which direction) the arm it drives turns, just like real orrery mechanisms translate one input crank into many different orbital speeds.
