Electrorheological Fluid: Field-Induced Chain Formation

This simulator models the electrorheological (Winslow) effect: dielectric particles suspended in an insulating fluid between two capacitor plates, polarized by an applied electric field. Turn the field on and watch every particle's induced dipole interact through a real point-dipole force law, snapping the suspension into field-aligned chains that bridge the plates and stiffen the fluid. Adjust field strength, particle loading and carrier drag, then push the shear-test slider to probe the Bingham yield stress at which the chain structure breaks — the same physics behind ER-fluid clutches, brakes and active dampers.
