Composite Weight-Optimization Lab

This simulation illustrates the creation and behavior of composite materials — combinations of a stiff reinforcing fiber and a formable matrix resin designed to achieve superior properties. Choose a fiber (carbon, E-glass or aramid), a matrix resin, and a fiber volume fraction, and watch a 3D representative volume element rebuild itself with the right fiber packing while rule-of-mixtures theory computes the composite's density, longitudinal modulus and strength live. A weight-savings readout compares the composite against a steel, aluminum or titanium plate of equal bending stiffness, making the real engineering payoff of composites — strength and stiffness at a fraction of the weight — directly visible.
