Advanced Ceramic Microstructure & Fracture

Advanced ceramics like alumina, silicon carbide, silicon nitride and zirconia get their strength (and their brittleness) from what happens during firing: fine powder particles diffuse together into a dense grid of interlocking grains, while any leftover pores act as the flaws that eventually decide how much load the part can take. This simulation grows a block of that microstructure in real time under a chosen firing temperature and sintering rate, estimates its fracture strength from grain size, residual porosity and the material's own fracture toughness, and then lets you apply a mechanical load to see exactly when — and where — it breaks.
