Materials Engineering 2D: Crystal Lattice Under Stress

This is the 2D cross-section companion to the 3D crystal-lattice-under-stress simulator. It drives the same elastic-to-plastic-to-fracture model through a flat row-and-column lattice of bonded atoms: drag the applied stress up and watch bonds stretch reversibly below the yield point, then watch a block of atoms slip sideways once yield is crossed, and finally watch the lattice tear apart at the fracture stress — while a live stress-strain curve on the strip chart below traces the exact same elastic ramp, plastic bend and fracture drop that a real tensile test produces. Temperature and defect density both lower the yield point, exactly as thermal softening and pre-existing flaws do in a real material.
