Propolis is a variable mix of tree and plant resins that bees collect, chew with wax and salivary enzymes, and use to varnish and seal the hive. Its exact recipe shifts with whatever local flora the foragers are raiding — poplar bud resin in temperate Europe, Baccharis shrub resin in Brazil's "green propolis", or mangrove-derived resin in parts of the Caribbean.
