A flat-packed Langstroth hive arrives as loose pine boards, a bag of nails, and a stack of frame parts. The Langstroth hive owes its enduring design to the "bee space" discovery of 1851: gaps smaller than about 1/4" get sealed with propolis and gaps larger than about 3/8" get filled with burr comb, but a gap in between is left open — letting movable frames be lifted out cleanly for inspection.
