A hive frame is a small piece of structural engineering: a rectangle of wood has to hold a vertical sheet of wax (or plastic) steady enough that, once bees start adding the weight of brood, pollen and honey, the comb they build stays flat and parallel to its neighbours. Beekeepers achieve that with horizontal wire strung through drilled holes in the end bars, tensioned taut, and then fused into the foundation sheet with a heated embedding tool so the wire can't cut loose later. Unembedded or slack wire is one of the most common causes of "brace comb" and buckled combs in a beekeeper's first few hives — the wire simply isn't doing its job of holding the foundation in a single flat plane while the comb is drawn and loaded with honey.
A wooden Langstroth frame on a virtual workbench, wired and fitted with foundation exactly as it would be by hand — tension the wire, embed it, then watch bees draw comb straight or crooked depending on the job.
