Raw wax cappings sliced off a honeycomb, plus scraps of burr comb and old brood comb, are full of propolis, pollen and cocoon debris. Rendering melts that raw material down and filters it into clean, pourable beeswax fit for candles, cosmetics or sale. Get the heat or the filter wrong and you either scorch the wax dark and brittle, or bottle a jar full of floating grit.
Cappings wax — the thin layer bees seal over ripe honey cells — is the purest, palest beeswax a hive produces, because it has never held brood. Old brood comb, by contrast, is dark and needs several rendering passes to come clean, since it has absorbed cocoon silk and propolis for years.
Raw wax cappings pile up inside a nested double-boiler pot, melt into a molten pool, and trickle out through a spout, a filter cloth and finally into a collecting jar — while heat, water-bath safety and filter fineness decide whether the batch comes out golden and clear or scorched and gritty.
Melt rate and scorch risk both scale with heat power, but a water bath caps the wax's temperature near water's boiling point, while direct heat has no ceiling. Filter fineness trades flow speed for how much floating debris reaches the jar.
