A solar wax melter is a glass-lidded, insulated box tilted toward the sun. Inside, a dark metal tray holds cappings (the thin wax caps sliced from honeycomb before extraction) or scraps of old comb. Sunlight passes through the glass, heats the tray by the greenhouse effect, and once the wax passes its ~62–64 °C melting point it liquefies, trickles down a mesh filter that catches propolis and debris, and pools in a mould below to set into a clean block.
Cappings wax is prized above all other beeswax grades — it has never touched brood, so it renders out almost white and is the wax of choice for cosmetics and fine candles, while old dark comb yields a stronger-coloured wax better suited to foundation or industrial use.

Melt rate depends on how closely the box's tilt matches the sun's elevation (the greenhouse effect that builds interior heat), the ambient temperature, and how much wax is loaded onto the tray.

Beeswax melts around 62–64°C but scorches and discolours above about 85°C, which is exactly why solar melters — gentle, slow and self-limiting — are prized over direct heat for cappings wax.
