Physarum Slime Mold: Agent-Based Network Optimization (2D)

This 2D companion drives the real Physarum-polycephalum agent algorithm behind the 3D version's growing colony: thousands of independent particle-agents each sense a shared pheromone field at three points ahead, steer toward the strongest reading, deposit their own trail, and let a diffuse-and-decay feedback loop consolidate their wandering paths into a sparse, efficient network between food sources — the same sensory-steering, self-reinforcing algorithm real slime-mold-network-optimization research uses. A live readout runs breadth-first search over the trail field every second to measure how close the emergent network gets to the shortest possible connections, and an optional maze wall lets you watch the network route around an obstacle, echoing the 2000 Nakagaki experiment that showed Physarum solving a maze.
