How it works

A hive-lift mechanism trades distance for force. The three mechanisms use their own real mechanical-advantage (MA) formula, with a standard textbook friction-efficiency factor applied so the effort force is realistic, not idealized:

Lever (class-2):      MA = effort_arm / load_arm        (load_arm = 0.15 m)
Screw jack:  MA_ideal = 2·π·r / lead   (r = 0.25 m crank)
             MA_actual = MA_ideal × η          (η ≈ 0.35, thread friction)
Pulley:      MA_ideal = n  (supporting rope segments)
             MA_actual = n × η_sheave^n         (η_sheave ≈ 0.95 per sheave)

Effort force  F = W / MA_actual,   W = m·g

The reach-zone check follows published ergonomic reach standards: a wheelchair user's comfortable unobstructed forward-reach zone runs roughly 0.38–1.22 m above the floor (ADA 308.2.1), centred near 0.75 m; a standing beekeeper's comfortable working-height zone runs roughly 0.70–1.50 m, centred near 1.10 m (elbow-height ergonomics). The readout compares the platform's working height against the active posture's zone and reports how far it sits from the optimum.

Lower MA, lower effort — a longer effort arm, finer screw lead, or more rope segments all cut the force needed to lift the same hive.
Friction is not free — the screw jack's ~35% efficiency and each pulley sheave's ~5% loss mean the real effort force is always higher than the frictionless ideal.
Reach and effort are independent — a mechanism can make lifting easy while still parking the hive outside a safe reach zone; both must be checked together.
