Waste Decomposition Timeline

How long does trash actually last once it's in the ground? This simulator lets you bury everyday waste — a banana peel, a sheet of paper, an aluminum can, a plastic bottle, a glass bottle — and run a real environmental-science decomposition clock at any speed you like. Each item shrinks and sinks into the soil at a rate set by its own typical decomposition time, so you can watch organic waste vanish in seconds of simulated time while a plastic bottle needs the slider pushed toward centuries and a glass bottle barely moves at all. Live readouts track total simulated time elapsed, how many items are buried, and how many have fully decomposed, turning an abstract fact ("plastic takes 450 years") into something you can actually watch happen.
