How it works

Every intersection carries its own sensor loop that counts queued vehicles on each approach. In adaptive mode a signal holds green only while its own direction still has traffic and switches the instant the cross-street queue outgrows it (with a minimum and maximum green to stay fair); in fixed-timer mode it just alternates on a clock, blind to demand. Streetlamps run their own presence sensor: with adaptive lighting on, a lamp dims to standby unless a vehicle sits within its detection radius, and always-on mode locks every lamp at full brightness regardless of use. Waste bins fill continuously; the collection truck either chases whichever real bin is fullest (smart routing) or drives a fixed round-robin loop that can pass a nearly-full bin to service an empty one.

Real-world relevance: this is the closed loop behind real smart-city deployments — sensor data feeds an optimizer, the optimizer changes an actuator (a signal phase, a lamp driver, a truck route), and the city measurably uses less energy and less waiting time than a city on fixed schedules.
