Subaerial rock
Submerged flank
Sea level
This 2D companion strips the same story the 3D scene animates — a submarine vent building a volcanic cone — down to the actual cross-section geometry and race that decides its fate: a control panel exposes effusion rate, flank angle (a stand-in for magma viscosity), wave-erosion rate and vent depth, a live cross-section shows the cone growing from the sea floor with its submerged flank tinted blue, and two charts track cumulative erupted vs. eroded volume and summit elevation against sea level over time, so you can watch the same balance that separates a real emerged island (Surtsey, the young end of the Hawaiian chain) from a drowned guyot play out numerically instead of just visually.
