This 2D companion shows the same eruption column-collapse mechanic as the 3D version in a plain cross-section view: a column of hot ash rises above the vent, becomes unstable, and collapses into a gravity current racing down the flank, with temperature, density and column height controlling how fast and how far it travels before settling into a deposit.
