Adaptive Landscape: Natural Selection Walk

This simulation demonstrates the process of natural selection and its role in driving evolutionary change over time. A population of organisms carries a single quantitative trait, and the environment defines a fitness landscape with one or more peaks. Every generation, individuals reproduce with a probability proportional to their fitness raised to a selection-strength exponent, offspring inherit the parent's trait with a small mutation, and small populations additionally drift by chance. Watch the population's mean trait climb toward the nearest fitness peak, get trapped on a local optimum among twin peaks, or scramble to re-adapt after you shift the environment — the same mechanism, in miniature, behind Darwin's finches and antibiotic resistance.
