Beekeepers feed sugar syrup to support colonies when nectar is scarce — thin "light" syrup in spring to stimulate build-up, and thick "heavy" syrup in autumn to build winter stores. The ratio of sugar to water, by weight, controls how concentrated (and how quickly a colony can process) the syrup is.
Never use icing sugar, brown sugar, or molasses-heavy sugars for bee syrup — the anti-caking agents and extra minerals can cause dysentery in bees. Plain white granulated sugar or a properly inverted syrup are the safe standards.
