A queen honeybee is not a different species or a different genome from a worker — she is a fertilised female fed exclusively royal jelly throughout larval life, in a specially built, peanut-shaped queen cell hanging vertically from the comb. That diet switches on genes that produce a fully developed reproductive tract, a larger body and a much shorter development time: about 16 days from egg to emerged queen, versus 21 for a worker.
Once mated and laying, she continuously produces Queen Mandibular Pheromone (QMP) — a blend picked up by her retinue of attendant workers and passed hand-to-hand (mouth-to-mouth, technically) through the colony. QMP suppresses worker ovary development and signals "queenright" status. In very large colonies the pheromone cannot physically reach every worker fast enough, which is part of why big hives are more prone to supersedure and swarming.
Because queen and worker larvae start out genetically identical, beekeepers exploit this: grafting a young worker larva into an artificial cell cup and feeding it royal jelly is literally how new queens are reared for sale. A caged queen is usually left 3–5 days before release so workers can build up her scent and calm down — releasing her too soon is the single most common cause of "balling" and rejection.
Scrub a queen cell through royal-jelly-fuelled development from egg to emerged queen, tune her pheromone output and colony size to watch the retinue and pheromone cloud respond, then try introducing a new queen in a cage and see whether the colony would accept or ball her.
Queen and worker larvae start genetically identical; an exclusive royal-jelly diet compresses queen development to about 16 days and produces a fertile adult. Her Queen Mandibular Pheromone shrinks or grows in reach with colony size, changing how many workers stay "queenright."
