Splitting divides one strong colony's frames of bees, brood and stores between a parent hive and a new split (nucleus colony). Done well, both halves end up queenright and build up into full colonies; done badly, the queenless half can fail, or so many bees drift back to the old hive location that the split never gets off the ground.
This is exactly why many beekeepers move a fresh split to a different apiary for the first few weeks, or turn the parent hive 90° and place the new box where the entrance used to face — tricks that reduce how many field bees drift back and abandon the new queen's colony before she ever gets to lay an egg.
