A hanging swarm — the football-shaped cluster of bees you sometimes see on a branch — looks alarming, but it is actually one of the gentlest phases of a honeybee colony's life. The bees have gorged on honey before leaving the old hive and, critically, have no comb, brood or stored food to defend.
