How it works

A colony's guard bees respond to how close, how fast and how disruptive an approach is. Standing well back and moving slowly keeps the hive's threat reading low; closing the distance quickly spikes it. A smoker masks the alarm pheromone guard bees release, damping the colony's response even at close range. Whether a raised threat level turns into an actual sting depends on how much skin the suit leaves exposed — a full veiled suit blocks nearly all of it, bare skin blocks almost none.

Approach distance — how close the beekeeper stands to the hive entrance; the colony's threat reading rises sharply inside about 1.5 m.
Movement speed — brisk, jerky movement reads as a threat to guard bees far more than the same distance approached calmly.
Smoker — toggles smoke use, which masks alarm pheromone and pulls agitation back down even while working close to the hive.
Suit level — None / Partial / Full sets how much of an elevated agitation reading actually converts into a landed sting.

Real-world relevance: this is why beekeeping safety training treats distance, calm movement, smoker use and PPE as one combined system rather than separate rules — each one only reduces risk, none eliminates it alone, which is also why first aid awareness for allergic reactions stays part of the training regardless of technique.
