A honeybee's body has three segments: the head (eyes,
antennae, mouthparts), thorax (flight muscles and legs) and
abdomen (digestion, stinger, wax glands). Its two pairs of wings
beat around 230 times per second, hooked together mid-flight by
tiny bristles called hamuli.
Head — sensory hub: compound eyes and simple ocelli for
vision, antennae for smell/touch, and mandibles plus a proboscis
for feeding. Thorax — the power unit: powerful indirect
flight muscles anchor here and drive both wing pairs and all six
legs. Abdomen — the metabolic core: houses the honey
crop, digestive tract, wax glands and (in workers) the stinger.

asynchronous flight muscles that contract faster than nerve
impulses arrive, oscillating with the thorax's own mechanical
resonance — the same anatomy that lets bees hover precisely
enough to pollinate flowers is what makes their flight muscles
a favourite model system in insect biomechanics.
