Before the movable-frame hive was patented by Lorenzo Langstroth in 1852, beekeepers across the world kept bees in fixed-comb containers: coiled straw skeps in Europe, hollowed-out logs ("bee gums") in forests from Africa to Appalachia, and unglazed clay pots or horizontal trunks around the Mediterranean and Middle East. In every case the bees built their own comb attached directly to the walls of the container, with no removable frames.
Because fixed-comb hives couldn't be opened non-destructively, 18th- and 19th-century inventors experimented with detachable top-bars and, eventually, frames with a fixed "bee space" — Langstroth's 1852 patent — which let keepers inspect and harvest comb without killing the colony, and is still the basis of most hives used today.
