Meshing gears form a gear train that transmits torque and rotational speed between axles. The gear ratio equals the driven gear's tooth count divided by the driving gear's tooth count — e.g. a 10-tooth gear driving a 40-tooth gear gives a 4:1 ratio, so the driven gear spins 4× slower but delivers 4× the torque, conserving power minus friction losses. Any two gears in direct mesh always rotate in opposite directions. Since the 1800s, involute tooth profiles have been the industry standard because they hold a constant velocity ratio throughout the mesh.
