Nanostructured Thermoelectric Generator

This simulation examines how nanotechnology is used to harness and manipulate energy at the nanoscale — specifically, how engineering the grain size of a thermoelectric material converts wasted heat directly into electricity. A phonon-glass, electron-crystal leg sits between a hot and cold reservoir: electrons drift smoothly across it carrying charge, while heat-carrying phonons scatter off nanoscale grain boundaries, losing forward progress the smaller the grains get. Tune grain size, doping and the hot/cold split and watch the Seebeck coefficient, thermal conductivity and the ZT figure of merit respond in real time, exactly as they do in the nanograined Bi₂Te₃ and SiGe-superlattice generators used to recover waste heat in engines, industrial exhaust and radioisotope power sources.
