Why power tapers

Constant-current stage: below roughly 55–65% SOC the pack can safely accept the charger's full rated power (or the pack's own max C-rate, whichever is lower).
Constant-voltage taper: above that point cell voltage nears its ceiling, so the battery management system tapers current down — power falls steeply as SOC climbs toward 100%.
Connector ceiling: CCS (up to 350 kW) and CHAdeMO (up to ~100 kW on most deployed units) only set the upper limit — once the battery itself is the bottleneck, a bigger charger delivers no extra power.
Cold packs charge slower: below ~10°C the BMS caps current further to protect the cells, stretching the constant-current stage.
This is why real DC fast-charging stops are usually planned to ~80%, not 100% — the last 20% takes almost as long as the first 80%.
