Biofuel Production Simulation: Enzymatic Hydrolysis & SSF

This simulator visualises the two-step biochemistry behind converting solid biomass into liquid biofuel: cellulase enzymes break down cellulose fibers into fermentable glucose (saccharification), while yeast simultaneously ferments that glucose into ethanol (SSF — simultaneous saccharification and fermentation), the process used in real lignocellulosic ethanol plants. A 3D bioreactor shows fiber particles dissolving, yeast cells multiplying, and CO₂ bubbles rising as the batch progresses, driven by coupled Michaelis–Menten and Monod kinetics with a genuine enzyme/yeast temperature trade-off and ethanol product inhibition. Adjust enzyme loading, process temperature, feedstock concentration and yeast pitch rate to see how each choice reshapes the glucose and ethanol curves and the final conversion yield.
