How it works

A 40-household village runs on a hybrid microgrid: rooftop solar, a small wind farm, a battery bank and a diesel genset for backup. Every simulated hour, dispatch follows a strict priority order — renewables first, battery second, diesel last:

net(h) = P_solar(h) + P_wind(h) − P_load(h)
if net ≥ 0:  charge battery with min(net, C-rate·cap, headroom)/η_c ; spill the rest
if net < 0:  discharge battery with min(|net|, C-rate·cap, SOC·η_d)
             remaining deficit → diesel, capped at its rated kW
             still unmet → logged as an unmet-load hour

Solar output follows a daylight sine curve (06:00–18:00) modulated by a smoothed cloud-cover series; wind output follows a cubic power curve between cut-in (3 m/s), rated (12 m/s) and cut-out (20 m/s) wind speed, driven by a random-walk wind-speed series. Diesel burns roughly 0.32 L per kWh delivered — a typical small genset's specific fuel consumption.

CAPEX assumes ≈$900/kW solar, $1,400/kW wind, $350/kWh battery and $400/kW diesel, spread over a simplified 15-year straight-line life — a teaching approximation of levelized cost of energy, not a bankable financial model. Undersizing the battery and diesel pushes unmet-load hours and LCOE up; oversizing renewables mostly increases spilled (wasted) energy instead of lowering cost further.
