Working-Memory Load in Microlearning Bursts

Microlearning breaks content into short focused chunks — but why does that actually help retention? This simulator models the real cognitive bottleneck behind it: a working-memory buffer of limited capacity (Cowan's K ≈ 4±1 chunks), where each incoming chunk's activation decays exponentially unless refreshed by interleaved review, and chunks that accumulate enough exposure before decaying consolidate into long-term memory. Push the burst pace too fast or the chunk size too large and the buffer overloads, silently dropping the weakest item — exactly the overload microlearning's short bursts and spaced pacing are designed to avoid.
